After 28 years as a teacher, I know that education is THE key to our future as a nation. The primary and secondary education in America is the most universally successful system in the world. Despite dire warnings of our failure in academic areas such as science and math, we have created the most innovative minds in the global workplace. However, the world is not stagnant and we must be bold to prepare our young people for the future they will face.
Despite the quality of the American education system, many issues must be addressed if we are to prepare our young people for the job market of the 21st century. After a career in education, I have seen trends come and go without really addressing the key issues that plague schools throughout Texas and the country. For us to truly provide a top-notch education we must look to provide the vision necessary to prepare our young people for the ever changing and competitve future they will face. Constructing an educational curriculum that thinks outside of the traditional box while supporting the foundations of the core subject areas is a commitment I will make.
The federal government must be a partner with the educational community including teachers, administrators, and parents. We can and should improve No Child Left Behind. One such positive in NCLB is that it has provided increased attention to reading literacy and making college more available and affordable to our students. However, expensive mandatory standardized testing has done little to improve the quality of our education system. Teachers in Texas and throughout the country have been forced to focus on the standardized tests rather than on the fundamentals and critical thinking skills our young people need to be able to compete in a changing job market. The accountability system must include a more comprehensive and cumulative approach without labeling students or schools as failures.
The federal government spends only about 8% of the federal budget on education but must take the lead and provide the leadership necessary to develop world class schools. We must retain our competitive advantage in the classroom if we are to do the same in the global economy. The Department of Education needs to focus on providing the direction necessary to give our students a truly 21st century education.
The public school system is not without its faults but I’m certain with a renewed focus on core subjects such as math, science, social studies, language arts, and foreign languages our foundation is strong. However, I believe it is essential to embrace the technological opportunities that will provide a 21st century education. I will push for a more innovative curriculum and the means to provide an excellent education for ALL students regardless of their socio-economic background.
American teachers are providing the most important product in the world to the most diverse population on the planet. With the proper guidance and advocacy we can sustain our strengths while regaining a foothold in areas where we have faltered. We have over 190,000 students in the Texas 14th Congressional District who need someone who knows firsthand what is really going on in our schools and will fight for the changes that need to be made. I will fight for your future!!
EDUCATION IS OUR FUTURE!!
